Building the Canolfan

Turning an old Vestry into a new Community Centre  (October 2009)
An ambitious project worth £450,000 will start this week to renew an old vestry belonging to Capel y Tabernacl, Efail Isaf, near Pontypridd. The project is financed jointly by The National Lottery and the Welsh Assembly, and it is expected that the work of extending and refurbishing the building to turn it into a community centre will take seven months.

The aim is to adapt the old vestry, that was originally built at the start of the 20th century, to become a multi-purpose centre for the use of the chapel and the community. The Tabernacl has two congregations, one worshiping in the Welsh language and the other holding English language services. But the new building will be available for the use of a much wider circle of people, within the village itself and the surrounding area.

A grant of £300,000 was awarded by the Welsh Assembly Facilities and Social Activities Programme, and £122,000 from the National Lottery People and Places fund.
