John Taihirion Davies

The influence of Parch John Taihirion Davies on the chapel and area is enormous. He was minister for a period of 55 years.

So much was the appreciation and respect of his congregation for him they placed a memorial behind the pulpit in the chapel.

Here is part of a Biography from the Centenary Book translated from Welsh.

JOHN TAIHIRION DAVIES. – Born in the year of 1825, in the parish of Llangyfelach. He was confirmed in his chapel at the age of 14, by the Rev Parch. J. Davies, Mynyddbach. He started preaching under the ministry of his brother Thomas Davies, in Horeb, Treforus.

When he worked as a boy in one of the forge works in Treforus, the workers would pay a 'turn' for him every time there was a Big Meeting in the area, so that he could go to hear the sermons, and repeat them to the workers the following day during their lunch time. This was a great help for him to develop his memory, to practice speaking, and to immerse in religious doctrine.

He came to Efail Isaf as a young man of 26 full of energy and enthusiasm. He lodged at Rhydlafar farm, about half a mile in the Cardiff direction from Taihirion. He had two miles to walk from there to Bronllwyn, and four miles to Efail Isaf. After starting the chapel at Bronllwyn, he would preach at the three chapels some Sundays.

He gave up Taihirion in 1893, and went to live to Pentyrch, near Bronllwyn, where his niece would look after his house for many years. He married Miss Mary Walters, Y Faerdref, in 1895 and soon after that gave up his care for Bronllwyn. He built a house in Church Village, and there in “Huanfa" he lived until he was moved to the House not made by hand, "Everlasting in Heaven."

He took an interest in every aspect of life. He did his best to promote culture and the advantages of education in the area. He was Chairman of the old "School Board", and he was in the forefront of the work of building a school to meet the needs of the area.

Often he would be seen on a Political platform, and his repartee and humour would always bring loud appreciation from the audience. Not one meeting of the Eastern Glamorgan Chapel Group would be complete unless 'Davies, Taihirion' was there, and taking part. He was known for many years as the "Bishop of the Area".  Mr. Davies was an inimitable fund raiser, and an unrivalled ticket seller.

As a preacher, he would get the "wind in his sail" very often. Whilst preaching on a tour in Aberystwyth, the praising broke out through the whole place, and there was a revival there for some time after he had left. Another time, he had a similar service in Oswestry, and very soon he received a plea calling him to go there as Minister. Possibly, this was the only call he had during his Ministry, but he felt that the knot was too tight between him and Efail Isaf for him to accept. He also felt his love as much for Taihirion, although he gave up that chapel in 1893, as he insisted on being called as John Taihirion Davies. He died in September 1904, after doing a good day's work, and no one left a bigger gap after him. Peace to his ashes.
