Carpenter's Arms

The Carpenter's Arms is one of the oldest buildings in the village. It was the meeting place for the establishment of Tabernacl Chapel and the hub of the cultural life of the area.

Gwaun hirion was a part of Ffrwd Phillip. In 1671 the area was described as ‘Tair gwayne hir alias gweynydd hirion and the forge’, the first reference to the forge (Efail) in the village.

The Gweunydd Hirion cottage stood at the corner when the Bryants family moved there in about 1820. But by the census of 1841 Daniel Bryant was keeping a tavern called the Carpenters Arms there.

The history of the Bryants family is bound with the tavern for over a century and the most famous of them, Tom Bryant, received international acclaim.
