Early History

The ealiest archaeological evidence in the area is the Chambered Tomb at Cae yr Arfau north of Creigiau. It shows that Neolithic people had settled in the area by at least around 6,000 BP (Before Present), about 1,500 years before Stonehenge.

The forests in the area were cleared for farming and rearing animals by the families of those that were buried in the Round Barrows on the Garth Mountain 4000 years ago. There is a group of five Bronze Age tumuli at the summit of The Garth.

To control the area an Iron Age hill fort was built above Hendresguthan south of Efail Isaf around 500BC.
